How it scores for you10 scores
A serene, exceptionally reliable cruiser with hybrid-level efficiency, trading driving engagement and value retention for plush comfort and low running costs.
Recalled about half as often as cars of the same model years; none of its 5 recalls were serious. About 14% of its owner complaints describe a crash, fire or injury. Based on recalls and serious defect reports — it doesn't capture everyday repairs or problems fixed by warranty extensions. Adjusted +10 points for its wider reputation.
5-star overall NHTSA crash rating (frontal 4, side 5, rollover 4).
About $1,700 a year in fuel (EPA estimate) — cheaper to run than about 81% of cars we track.
15.2 cu ft of cargo space — more than about 50% of other sedans we track.
Based on the Camry/Avalon platform, the ES offers generous front and rear legroom for five, above typical for the compact-luxury class. Cargo at 15.2 cu ft is solid.
The ES is tuned for smooth, quiet cruising rather than engagement. FWD only, soft suspension, light steering, and comfort focus mean it lags sporty rivals in driving fun.
Decent infotainment and available safety features for its era, though the mouse-based Remote Touch interface was widely criticized. Roughly segment-typical for a mid-2010s luxury sedan.
A hallmark of the ES: quiet cabin, plush ride, supportive seats. Long known as one of the most comfortable, serene sedans in its class.
Luxury brands like Lexus tend to lose value faster than average.
No published tow rating; front- or rear-wheel drive only.
