How it scores for you10 scores
A rugged, durable off-roader with a proven 6,000-lb tow rating and strong reliability, but thirsty running costs and truck-like on-road manners are the price of admission.
Reliability63

Recalled somewhat less often than cars of the same model years (over-the-air software recalls count half); none of its 3 recalls were serious. About 5% of its owner complaints describe a crash, fire or injury. Based on recalls and serious defect reports — it doesn't capture everyday repairs or problems fixed by warranty extensions. Limited history so far, so this score may move as more recalls are filed. Adjusted +6 points for its wider reputation.

Safety94

4-star overall NHTSA crash rating (frontal 4, side 5, rollover 3).

Running costs39

About $2,900 a year in fuel (EPA estimate) — cheaper to run than about 39% of cars we track.

Cargo & utility50

Cargo volume isn't published for this car.

Passenger space55

Roomy 5-seat SUV with generous cargo; optional third row exists but base config here is 5 seats. Solid space for the class.

Driving fun58

New turbo/hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain adds torque and off-road capability; body-on-frame excels off-pavement but on-road handling remains truck-like.

Tech55

6th-gen adds modern Toyota infotainment and Safety Sense suite, a big step up from prior gen, though not class-leading versus car-based rivals.

Comfort50

Improved cabin over old gen, but firm ride and truck architecture keep it segment-typical for comfort.

Value retention70

SUVs and hybrids usually hold their value better than average.

Capability86

Rated to tow 6,000 lb; all- or four-wheel drive available.
